Getting here

The UPS in Space association and the Jocelyn Bell Observatory in Toulouse share the same building, on the campus of the University of Toulouse. The campus is large, its gates close at different times, and a route planner knows nothing of it. This page brings together what you need to know before setting off.

How are you coming ?

Building U5-MEP houses both the association’s rooms and the observatory. The campus gates close at different times : that is what a route planner does not know.

By car

  • Day entrance : Campus entrance, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and Saturday morning. By day this area is also reached through the other entrances off the roundabout.
  • Day entrance, voie 10 : Serves the room S car park and the one beside the building. By day this area is also reached through the other entrances off the roundabout.
  • Day entrance, voie 7 : Allée Émile Durand, on the south side of the campus. The furthest away.
  • Day entrance, avenue de Rangueil : At the avenue de Rangueil roundabout. Same hours as the other day entrances: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and Saturday morning, outside school holidays and public holidays.
  • Entrance open day and night : On the Université Paul Sabatier metro side. One way. The only one open in the evening.
  • Night exit : One way. At night it is the only way out: you do not leave by the way you came in.
  • First roundabout, keep right : 130 m from the main entrance. Keep right: to the left, the exit is closed at night.
  • Nearest day car park : Through voie 10. Open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday and Saturday morning, outside school holidays and public holidays.
  • Car park open at all hours : By day through the roundabout. The only one reachable in the evening, on Sundays, during holidays and on public holidays. Step-free pavements lead from there to the building.
  • Room S car park : Through voie 10, like the previous one.
  • Sharing-evenings car park : In front of the UFR STAPS, 80 m from the room.

  • Metro, bus and cable car Université Paul Sabatier : Metro line B and the Téléo cable car, which has its terminus here. Buses 34, 44, 54, 56, 81, 82, 115 and L7, plus the Direct shuttle. 632 m from the building, a 7-minute walk.
  • Bus Giordano Bruno : Lines 27, 37 and 80. The closest stop to the building: 193 m, a 3-minute walk.
  • Bus Sports Universitaires : Lines 27, 37 and 80. 31 m from the sharing-evenings room.
  • Metro Faculté de Pharmacie : Metro line B, buses 44 and L7. The other station serving the campus, from the north. 712 m from the building, a 9-minute walk.

  • Covered bike racks : A hundred covered spaces, thirty metres from the building.
  • VélôToulouse Roche – Laas : 19 docks, 462 m from the building.
  • VélôToulouse UT3 – Champs Magnetiques : 20 docks, 462 m from the building.
  • VélôToulouse Univ. Paul Sabatier – Métro : 32 docks, 518 m from the building.
  • VélôToulouse Belin – SupAéro : 20 docks, 640 m from the building.
  • VélôToulouse Fac de Pharmacie – Métro : 18 docks, 651 m from the building.
  • VélôToulouse Narbonne – Durand : 20 docks, 713 m from the building.

  • The association’s rooms : Building U5-MEP, 2nd floor, door 222. The building has a lift.
  • Observing area : Public observing sessions are held here, at night.
  • Sharing-evenings room : On the ground floor, every Tuesday evening.
  • ADM building, central administration : 212 m west of the building. It is also the campus reception.
  • University library : 296 m west of the building.
  • Resto U’ Le Théorème : 447 m west, near the main entrance.
  • Resto U’ Le Canal : 364 m south-east, near the sharing-evenings room.
  • Forum Louis Lareng : 448 m south-west of the building, right by the main entrance and the night exit.

The full campus map

The university publishes its own campus map. It locates the buildings by number, ours being U5, along with the car parks, the gates, the controlled-access barriers, the footpaths and the VélôToulouse stations. On the back : the traffic and parking rules, the gate opening hours, lecture theatre accessibility and the safety numbers.

It covers the whole campus, but does not say which entrance to use to reach us at a given hour : that is what the panels above give.

One caveat : it gives the gates as open from 5.30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, wider than what we observe. The hours above are read at the gate and take school holidays and public holidays into account.

The map to take with you

The same markers, plus the eighteen routes worked out on the real network : by car during opening hours and in the evening, on foot and by bike. You open it in Google Maps on your phone, and the route is calculated from wherever you are. The layers can be unticked one by one.

The campus is on the south-east side of Toulouse. Saint-Agne is the nearest station, Matabiau serves the main lines, and the airport is on the opposite side of the city. By car, the ring-road exit depends on the direction and on the time. The places the association works with are numbered from nearest to furthest : most of them are on avenue Édouard Belin, a few minutes from the building.

Three ways in, three journeys. All of them end at Université Paul Sabatier station, seven minutes on foot from the building. The times come from the timetables published by Tisséo, and the colours from its own palette. Waiting time has to be added, five minutes at most on the metro.
